Stardate: 11/12/2007 First Snow

This weekend the temperature dropped and we had our first snow! It was so cool! Maddy and I loved it. It snowed heavily with heavy gusts of wind that blew the bejesus out of everything. This was the storm that downed the 10 ships in the Black Sea. We got up to 6 inches in this one storm.

We all went out for some walks. Maddy wore her head-to-toe snowsuit that Pat bought for her (he is always so worried about her being cold!). She looked like a giant raspberry in it, but she was warm and cute. We went to the grocery store one night and she danced around in the falling snow singing, “It’s snow time. It’s snow time!” She would stand with her face skyward and try to catch snow flakes in her mouth. They landed on her nose and cheeks and she would giggle. Childhood is such a magical time! She also learned to make and throw snowballs, but she asks permission to throw them at things. She and I also went to Poesie Square and she ran around in the snow with a little boy who was there with his dad. She made snow angels in the snow and threw snow balls. She stood her ground when she got hit with snowballs, too. She only cried a bit when she got snow in the face, but she didn’t whine at all when it went down her back!

The snow was beautiful. It clung to the trees and buildings highlighting all the nooks and crannies of the ornate architecture. The streets and parks looked clean; normally, there is a lot of dirt on the streets and parks don’t have much grass (usually they just have dirt). The buildings had snow on their rooftops and smoke coming from chimney stacks. Cars were mired in the heavily, slushy snow. Normally passable sidewalks, streets and alleys suddenly became icy quagmires that were almost impassable. In the rare places the snow was removed, the water residue turned to invisible ice and was highly dangerous. Also dangerous, the polished marble walkways that are ubiquitous here. We saw many people take spills. Pat had to hold my arm when we returned from the Opera last night.
