Stardate: 11/14/2007 Cyclones, Downed Ships and Oiled Birds & Snow Delay

Cyclones, Downed Ships and Oiled Birds
We heard today that the snow storm (folks here have been calling it a cyclone, I don’t know why) that came through last weekend with its powerful gusts of wind downed 4 - 5 ships in the Black Sea. One Russian tanker spilled a ton of oil, but thankfully it was floating more toward the Russian beaches. Unfortunately, they are not prepared at all to lessen the negative environmental impact of this massive oil spill. All these animals are just dieing. Birds are covered in oil and walking on the beaches because they are too heavy to fly. It has gotten colder and some of them are freezing to death. Where is Greenpeace when you need them?

Snow Delay
The snow continued to fall today. It impacted many things. First, many of the kiosks that are normally open by 8:30am weren’t open until 11am. Also, the transport of town was a mess. Trams and buses were running slowly and the subway was far more overcrowded than normal. Many of my students called into class to let me know that they were going to be late or absent. It was so weird; I felt like the world was on delay.
