Pat Entry Stardate: 10/24/2007

Speaking of caviar, Kate and I just found this super high-tech grocery store around the corner from our flat. Unbelievable! It would make any house-proud, town-mouse from the upper east side of Manhattan feel right at home. They don't have shopping carts, they have boys holding baskets. They follow you around and as you pick things out, you just plop them into the basket. Of course this service comes with a price. It's fucking expensive in there! But it's cool because it's so different from the normal Ukrainian open-air market experience we've had so far. It's a world away from the dirt covered carrots and poop covered eggs we grew accustomed to seeing. It's marble floors, mahogany woodwork and chandeliers, and it's open 24/7. But what's really cool about "Gorka" are the selections (Gorka means hill in Russian). The beer section is impressive. I just bought a Piss Boy Belgian Blonde, a marzan from that Bamberg brewery that makes the tasty smoked beer, and one from Austria that is the world's strongest lager @ 14% abv! Good times! But back to the caviar. Apparently, black is the best but isn't technically legal anymore. At least not in Russia. But this place has it and for a tin about the size of a large can of tuna, only H7425! What is that in dollars? About $1485? Give or take a couple of bucks. BTW, I passed on it.
